Post-Modernism in Contemporary Film

The Unborn

Post-feminism is a veiw that focuses on the female gender. Feminism brought about many social and political changes, however Post-feminism does not assume that this means gender issues are no longer valid. On the other hand, it acknowledges that there are still many areas of interest and concern within gender politics; but it recognises that these issues are very diffeent from the ones faced by gender theorists in the mid-20th century.

The text I have chosen to analyse is "The Unoborn which was released earlier this year in July 2009, and has been directed by David S. Goyer. The unborn is about A young woman who fights the spirit that is slowly taking possession of her.

A comprehensible judgement to why this is a post-feminist text is that the narrative is central to a female, Casey Beldon, who is the main protagonist,is also a female. This immediately relates to the text being a post feminist text as male figures are in the lesser role and have least significance and because of this females dominate the film and challenge the stereotype neurotic female representation as both actresses are shown to be ultimately active.

Evermore, a binary opposition of males VS females shows the conflict on the idea of power struggle in society between two opposing groups. The other text in question which is Flight plan is in a similar position as it also carry's a lead protagonist who is female and challenges stereotyping by taking situations into her own hands and proving men wrong even in the film itself.

both characters are shown to have a male lifestyle so to assume through stereotyping. Jodie is a aeroplane engineer which is normally shown to be a male dominated job and Casey to be a graphic designer which is also normally seen to be a male dominated area of jobs. Although both films had a lead female protagonist the males were still shown to be in the more dominant positions,

For example in Flight plan the air marshal and the captain were both male and all their decisions over ruled the females therefore re-enforcing the fact that males are still in control. also in The Unborn she can not escape the demon so she seeks help from a male and the male is the one who holds the solution to the problem therefore also reiterating the fact that males are still in power and can make things happen.
